Regarded as one of the most eminent German artists of his generation, Günther Förg (1952–2013) is known for his work in painting, photography, sculpture, and graphic arts. The central element of his work is the critical reflection on, reinterpretation of, and expansion of modernist traditions. Förg’s distinctive contribution lies in the dissolution of boundaries between painting, photography, sculpture, and architecture, which is most evident in his exhibition installations. Coarseness and lightness, as well as melancholy and a joyful spirit of experimentation, come together in his work.
